Options to Avoid Dry Cleaning

Sometimes when I go into my wardrobe it seems that all of my favorite fashionable clothing has that fateful little tag on the inside claiming the garment is "dry clean only." As incovenient as these directions may seem, dry clean only does not need to be followed as strictly as the clothing company would lead you to believe. There are actually a couple different ways that you can avoid racking up a huge dry cleaning bill.

Hand Wash
Just like all corporations, the company that made your clothing is trying to protect itself. It only has to put one method of washing on the tag and dry cleaning is the safest route. However, most "dry clean only" garments will be perfectly fine if you hand wash them. Just a little while ago I wrote a blog on handwashing that you can check out here. http://happycleaning.blogspot.com/2012/02/how-to-hand-wash.html

Check with Your Dry Cleaner
If you are a little wary of not following the directions you can always check with a professional to see how the garment will hold up after handwashing. Also if the clothing has been dry cleaned once it will do better with hand washing afterwards. Either way, you will be able to ensure that your clothing is kept neat and clean.

Do Your Own Pressing
A huge part of the dry cleaning process aht makes your clothing look so good afterwards is the pressing. If you are willing to spend the money you can actually do this at home with a little help from the LauraStar ironing system. Though the original price is a little high, if you use the dry cleaner frequently this system will help you keep all of your clothes looking professionally done without frequent visits and checks to the cleaner.

  2. Is it ever safe to try washing a "dry clean " only item on that really gentle/knit cycle in the wash? Love and hugs from the ocean shores of California, Heather :) :) :)

  3. Hi Heather! Wish I was there in CA with you. I'd ask your local drycleaner about hand washing something. You don't want to ruin your favorite clothing item just to save some money. But if it can be hand washed, it will be cheaper and safer.... Enjoy!
